BME has made significant progress in the ARWU ranking

BME has moved up a notch in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), best known as the Shanghai list, from last year's 901-1000 to 801-900. Regional competitor Czech Technical University in Prague (CVUT) is in the same category, while the Warsaw University of Technology (PW) is one level behind.

BME's progress is due in large part to the Nobel Prize of its former student, physicist Ferenc Krausz, as the score on the "Nobel Prize and Fields Medal alumni" indicator has jumped from 9.1 last year to 16.4.

In the 2023 global ranking of academic subjects, the university performed particularly well in mathematics and mechanical engineering, ranking 201-300 in the former and 301-400 in the latter, the only Hungarian university to do so.

The ARWU, prepared by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, is one of the three most recognised international rankings for higher education (the other two being QS and THE). It covers more than 2500 institutions, of which the top 1000 are listed. Its indicators are compiled in a way that favours large science universities in particular.

Recently, including this year, only four Hungarian universities have been included: ELTE, the University of Szeged and Semmelweis University. The top three spots are held by American institutions, namely, Harvard, Stanford and MIT.

In the latest QS ranking, published earlier this summer, BME has also moved up.
