Gender equality in STEAM is not a women’s issue

BME student Dóra Eszter Baranyai shares her views after the latest EELISA roundtable event she attended.

Gathered under the umbrella of the EELISA alliance, we had the privilege to discuss one of the most pressing issues in STEAM education: gender equality. (STEAM: science, technology, engineering, art and math.) The conversation was not just about acknowledging the gender gap but about identifying actionable solutions and celebrating the progress we are making. As a panelist at the 4th EELISA Roundtable, I had the opportunity to share my personal journey, discuss the challenges, and most importantly, focus on the inspiring initiatives that are actively shaping a more inclusive future.

My path into STEAM was not always straightforward. Like many young women, I encountered moments of self-doubt and uncertainty. I often found myself in rooms where women were the minority, which reinforced my belief that more representation was needed. Instead of discouraging me, these experiences fuelled my determination to not only persist but also to inspire others.

Representation matters. When young women see others excelling in STEAM fields, it changes their perception of what is possible. Too often, we hear stories of brilliant women hesitating to take opportunities as they feel they aren’t ‘ready’ or ‘qualified enough.’ The truth is, no one starts fully prepared.

Confidence grows through experience, and it is crucial that we encourage more women to take that first step, to trust in their abilities, and to embrace the challenges that come their way.

One of the most transformative aspects of the EELISA alliance is its commitment to gender equality through concrete initiatives. EELISA is not just about opening doors—it’s about ensuring those doors remain open for the women who come after us. Through mentorship programs, collaborative research projects, and networking opportunities, EELISA has provided a space where women in STEAM can connect, learn, and lead.

I have personally experienced the impact of EELISA’s initiatives. Whether through discussions with inspiring female leaders, participation in hands-on projects, or engagement with like-minded peers, this platform has reinforced the importance of community in fostering confidence and career growth. The support and encouragement from such networks can make all the difference for young women stepping into STEAM fields.

If we want to seize this momentum and create lasting change, there are several key actions we must take:

Celebrate and Showcase Women in STEAM: Visibility is a powerful motivator. Universities and industries must actively highlight the contributions of women in STEAM, ensuring they are seen as leaders and innovators.

Implement Inclusive Policies: Flexible work environments, parental leave, and leadership development programs can help retain women in STEAM careers.

Challenge Self-Doubt: The biggest barrier many women face is not a lack of talent, but a lack of confidence. We need to encourage young women to seize opportunities, even when they feel they aren’t ‘ready enough.’

Encourage Mentorship and Support Networks: Having strong role models and mentors can help bridge the gap and provide guidance for women navigating their careers in STEAM.

The conversations at the EELISA Roundtable underpinned that gender equality in STEAM is not just a women’s issue—it is a collective responsibility. By working together, we are not just reshaping the landscape of STEAM fields; we are building a more innovative, inclusive, and equitable future.

More women are entering STEAM, more voices are being heard, and more impact is being made. But our work is not done. Each of us—whether as educators, policymakers, industry leaders, or students—have a role to play in shaping the next generation of STEAM professionals.

When young girls see role models excelling in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics, it sends a clear message: You belong here. Your ideas matter. Your contributions are valuable.

The future of STEAM belongs to everyone. Let’s make sure everyone has a place in it.
