Hassan Charaf elected as rector nominee by the Senate of the BME

The appointment of the new rector requires the agreement of the Ministry of Culture and Innovation. Eventually, the President of Hungary appoints the nominee on the recommendation of the Minister.
The 28 member Senate of the BME met on 10 June 2024 at 13:00 to hear a 10-10 minute presentation by the rector candidates and then to decide by secret ballot. The two candidates were Rita Kiss, academician, professor, Head of the Department of Mechatronics, Optics and Mechanical Informatics at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering; and Hassan Charaf , professor, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics.
Hassan Charaf received the most votes.
Academician Tibor Czigány, whose three-year term as rector is to expire at the end of the month, did not run for the position again.

The candidate chosen by the Senate will be appointed as rector by the President of Hungary on the initiative of the Minister of Culture and Innovation. The new rector will take office on 1 July.
