New university rankings published
2016. 09. 22.Within 2 months two renowned international university ranking companies have placed BME among the world’s top 1000 universities.
This past July the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) placed BME at the 850th place on the list of the world’s top 1000 universities. (Editor’s note: with regard to the quality of education BME is among the best 300 institutions.)
BME has been placed for the first time in QS World University’s newly published ranking, where it is also featured among the top 1000 institutions. (Editor’s note: BME has been highlighted in the regional and thematic rankings of the Spanish ranking company for years, for the latest results see our previous article.)
There are 916 universities in the new world ranking of Quacquarelli Symonds (editor’s note: compared to last year’s 891 institutions only 25 more were assessed). When compiling the list the first 400 universities were given individual ranking positions, the rest were placed in groups of 50 from 401 to 701+. The ones above 701 were given no ranking.
Out of the 4322 assessed universities six Hungarian institutions made it to among the best 1000, BME being the fourth out of them falling in the 701+ category. The University of Szeged is ranked at the 501-550th place, Loránd Eötvös University at the 601-650th place, the University of Debrecen at the 651-700th place, while Budapest Corvinus University, and the University of Pécs together with BME were placed in the 701+ category.
Leading this year’s ranking, just as last year’s, is MIT. The second and third places are occupied by Stanford and Harvard Universities, respectively.
The rankings of the higher education institutions of the Visegrad Countries are as follows: The Czech Republic: Charles University 302nd place, Czech Technical University 501-550th place, Masaryk University 601-650th place, Brno University of Technology, and Palacký University 651-700th place Poland: University of Warsaw 366th place, Jagiellonian University 431-440th place, Warsaw University of Technology 601-650th place, University of Lodz, Nicolaus Copernicus University, and University of Wroclaw 701+ category Slovakia: Comenius University 651-700th place |
The institutions were assessed by several different indicators. Indicators used in calculating the rankings include academic reputation (40%), citations per paper (20%), student to faculty ratio (20%), employer reputation (10%), and percentage of international faculty (5%) and students (5%).
According to the assessment BME is the best Hungarian higher education institution with respect to the total number of papers by institutions not only in QS’ regional but also in the world ranking (editor’s note: this year the total citation and paper counts were normalized by faculty areas, and papers whose contributors come from too many different institutions were excluded.) In this area BME falls in the 501+ category in the international ranking. As far as employer reputation is concerned BME is the second best university in Hungary, internationally it is at the 308th place, which is its best category result in the competition with other institutions.
As regards academic reputation BME also retains a good ranking internationally being in the 401+ category (out of the Hungarian universities it comes fourth).
With regard to the rest of the indicators BME is placed in the 501+ category.
